Much was made about Fred Thompson’s exit from the Republican race a couple of weeks ago. His third place showings in Iowa and South Carolina were just not enough to carry his campaign along to this point.
He was widely expected to make an announcement in support of John McCain. In fact, the two men are very friendly and Thompson was working on McCain’s campaign prior to entering the race himself. But thus far, no endorsement has come.
Tomorrow, Fred’s homestate of Tennessee will vote and an endorsement might help tip the scales a bit to favor McCain. And while McCain was there over the weekend, the official campaign schedule doesn’t show him stopping in Tennessee either today or tomorrow.
So maybe the McCain campaign is saving Thompson’s endorsement for a very last minute surprise to capture some media attention in the final hours before voters head to the polls. If there is a Fred Thompson surprise planned for today or tomorrow morning, the McCain campaign has done a really good job of not leaking it to the press. I’ve not seen any rumors in the media, or even among volunteers, that a Thompson endorsement is in the works.
Perhaps then Fred Thompson is just done with politics and doesn’t care who wins any more. That may be the case. Consider the fact that he could barely bother to pull out of the race, managing to issue only a short statement to the press.
One thing we can probably say for sure is that there will be no Attorney General Fred Thompson in a McCain administration unless an endorsement comes along in the next 24 hours.

This article proves what a loss to the Republican Party and to America Fred Thompson’s withdrawal really was. No there won’t be an Attoeney General Thompson and there won’t be an endorsement from him. Why is it so hard for folks to get over the idea that a man could run for office NOT for selfish reasons and NT for personal gains but because he wanted to give his best and SERVE his country in the best way he could? You media types abused the man from day 1. An Associated Press reporter who was not present wrote a totally false article about a group of firefighters in IOWA being angry because Thompson refused to don one of thier hats. The truth was th firefighters had cheered him. Now that you have hounded him out of the race with your abuse and lies, you continue to wite snide little remarks like the one about there not being an attorney General Thompson unless he endorses McCain chop chop! When are you media types going to find some character and start caring about the truth?

Your article seems very hostile towards Sen. Thompson when you say:
“One thing we can probably say for sure is that there will be no Attorney General Fred Thompson in a McCain administration unless an endorsement comes along in the next 24 hours.”
When did Sen. Thompson ever say he wanted the job of Attorney General? You are acting like it is Thompson’s duty to endorse McCain. You of course would be very wrong. Sen. Thompson specifically said he would not be endorsing anybody in this race because of their lack of conservative values. This of course would include McCain because of his unwillingness to dismiss the illegal immigration “amnesty” approach from his last bill with Kennedy.
As a matter of fact, if you look at Sen. Thompson’s policies and those of Sen. McCain’s, you would find quite a wide gap exists. So much for an endorsement from a conservative to a moderate. Time to take the party back to it’s conservative roots folks and quit pandering to the moderates and liberals.

Why am I not surprised to see yet another hit-piece from self-acclaimed pundits without a clue about the best possible candidate we’ve seen in many decades. A man not only well qualified and experienced but, not part of the usual political games.
There is one thing we can say for sure, the MSM and pundits are a worthless lot of depraved idiots who haven’t yet recognized a rebellion aimed directly at them is at hand.

McCain’s Z-visa plan is actually not amnesty in any way. It merely recognizes the situation of many hardworking immigrants who contribute so much to our economy, pay taxes, and have been unfairly characterized as leeches by some so-called “conservatives”. All this, while risking life and limb because they couldn’t get legal paperwork through our ridiculous quota system.
In fact, true amnesty wouldn’t be good enough for these people. We should be thanking them. They’ve done more than you or most Americans will ever do to deserve living here. Being a true American is not a birthright, it’s something you earn - and many native-born Americans today haven’t done shit to earn that right.
February 4th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I sure hope Fred is smart enough not to continue on supporting that gas bag.
February 4th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
The comment claiming that illegal immigrants are true Americans is horseshit. The only thing they’ve done more than most Americans is break the law. Many LEGAL immigrants have abided by the law and gotten “legal paperwork through our ridiculous system”. Amnesty IS amnesty. Those who came here illegally need to get back in line.

Maybe Fred will run for governor. But as a former Fred supporter if he comes out publicly for McCain, he loses my vote and if he’s second on the ticket, I still won’t vote for McCain. McCain’s not my friend.
February 4th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
I like Fred and would have voted for him in my state’s primary tomorrow. That being said, I agree with Laura.
I’ll vote for Romney in the primary, and if he wins the nom., I may vote for him in the general. But I will never vote for McCain. Principles are principal.
Fred would do well just to sit back and wait for the Tennessee governership without endorsing anyone. If he does decide to endorse anyone, I’d hope it’d be Romney, but I just don’t see that happening, considering he and McCain’s friendship (shudder).
February 4th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Fred hasn’t nor will he ever endorse liberals!
What insanity made you think he would!?
February 4th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
McCain/Kennedy’s Z-visa is amnesty because for every rule there is a way to get around it. It was so full of loopholes that piece of so called legislation was a give me to the illegals and McCain knew it. I will never vote for McCain, whoever his VP is. Besides, giving our country away to illegals, he’s too bent on getting Osama, just like Bush wanted vengence on Sadaam for his dad. It will put us right back where we were eight years ago. No way, do I want to go back there.
February 4th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Wow, judging by the comments, Austin your man has a lot of work to do if he is to entice conservatives to vote for him.
February 5th, 2008 at 12:01 am
Good point. Austin, I thought that you were a conservative?
February 5th, 2008 at 8:15 am
I think Fred is holding out for a V.P. position with
whoever wins the nomination between his liberal friend McCain, (as a balance) or with Romney, as a
factor to strengthen Romney’s credibility as a true conservative. He is unlikely to endorse prior to someone getting the needed delegate commitment.
Thompson, was gaining as he went into S.Carolina,
so his dropping out might well suggest a strategy.
If he links with McCain, I might vote for them, but I’d greatly prefer he partners with Romney!

As someone who contributed a substantial amount of cash to Thompson, I anm sorely disappointed in his early pullout.
I can’t help but wonder, if his entrance was simply staged to pull votes from other candidates and once that was accomlished, he pulled out.
Many of his staffers have come out in support of McCain. Mary Matalin and one of Dick Cheney’s daughters were behind the scenes running his campaign.
At first I thought perhaps Thompson had been snookered once the “experts” took over, but now I simply think those of us who thought the grassroots drafted him, were the ones that were snookered.
I won’t be voting for any candidate in the GOP, even if Thomnpson is on the ticket.
I never thought I would say this, but I will be voting for Ron Paul in the primary. At least I know where he stands, and to tell you the truth, many of the things that I thought I disagreed with him on, initially, particularly foreign policy, is beginning to make much more sense.
The rest of you can do whatever you want, in support of “the party”. Anymore, I feel doing that is herd mentality.
When I see the NASDAQ being partially bought up by a state owned exchange in the Middle East and being peddled as “free trade”, I have to ask myself how much further into fascism am I willing to step, before I quit making excuses for either party.
Mitt Romney makes my skin crawl. He talks out of both sides of his mouth and comes across as someone who would do literally anything, to anybody to have power. He strikes me as one of the most power hungry people to ever bid for president.
I will no longer march in step to the puppet masters who in reality are pulling the strings in both parties, for their private club of transnationals.
February 8th, 2008 at 5:44 am
Anyone who says they’ll vote for Ron Paul and claims to be a former Thompson is merely a disingenuous, seditious troll. They have nothing in common. Fred was the only true conservative in the race and he did what he said he’d do. Takes a Carter to get a Reagan and that should be Fred in 12 after the Dems torpedo the economy and no doubt blame it on Bush. Gov of Tennessee should put him in great shape for that and he’ll be the same age Reagan was in 80.
As to the moron who claimed that z visas were not amnesty and that illegals deserve amensty; you are the most clueless POS on the planet. If a person robs a bank and then is ordered to pay a fine; do they get to keep the money they stole? No. Yet that is exactly what allowing those who broke into our country to stay is, no matter what cursory fines or touchback clauses they might be forced to pay/do.
Enforce the laws.
