Actor and former National Rifle Association president Charlton Heston has died today at the age of 84. Heston played a number of historical figures in his life, from Andrew Jackson to Marc Antony, and of course his famous roles as Moses and Ben-Hur. Heston was also active in politics as a civil rights proponent, opposed McCarthyism, and supported various Republican candidates and causes. In later life, he served as president of the NRA from 2000 to 2003, and is well-known for saying that presidential candidate Al Gore would take his Second Amendment rights “from my cold, dead hands.” Heston is survived by his wife, Lydia and their two children, Fraser and Holly.

And he played Taylor in one of my favorite films of all time– “Planet of the Apes.” Unlike Ronald Reagan, who only became a “great” President because no one wanted to criticize a desparately sick old man, Heston was a great actor and was respectable for his deeply held convictions. He apparently had a brain in his head– until it was ravaged by Alzheimer’s– and the intelligence in his acting was readily apparent. What Michael Moore did to him in “Bowling…” caused me to mutter out loud that Moore– at least in this instance– was full of crap.
Plus, for a supposed conservative he sure did end up playing in many left wing movies. So, hats off to a great actor and a great man. He sure did have a great life.
