Rudy Giuliani’s third place showing in Florida and John Edwards’ third place finish in South Carolina have ended the White House dreams of both hopefuls. Giuliani’s departure was widely expected, but in a bit of a surprise, Edwards announced he would be leaving the Democratic race before next Tuesday’s burst of national primary contests. Giuliani is expected to quickly endorse John McCain’s campaign, while John Edwards has said he will make no official announcement. Edwards can directly swing a couple dozen delegates to whichever candidate he backs, in addition to the organizational and momentum boosts that he backing would offer. “You don’t always win, but you can always try to do it right … that’s what the American people deserve, a return to honesty and substance in our political discussion,” Giuliani said. Both Edwards and Giuliani would probably be top contenders for the role of Attorney General if their party’s nominee were to become President. Rudy Giuliani’s dismal third place finish in Florida appears to have ended the former NYC Mayor’s campaign tonight. Time Magazine is reporting that McCain’s campaign manager Rick Davis has essentially struck a deal with people in the Giuliani camp to secure an endorsement in the next couple of days. Giuliani has long stated that he would be voting for McCain if he hadn’t been running himself. It’s also thought that Giuliani doesn’t want to roll the dice and continue on to Super Tuesday as it would likely mean an ego-crushing defeat in his home state of New York. By defeating Mitt Romney and eliminating Rudy Giuliani, John McCain has all but captured the Republican Presidential nomination here tonight. Also, look for an endorsement from Fred Thompson in the next week or so as McCain consolidates his support among conservatives. On the eve of a likely third place finish in Florida that will finish his Presidential campaign, Rudy Giuliani is acting like a candidate who knows his days are numbered. NBC’s Matthew Berger has reported that Giuliani gave each member of the press following his campaign a baseball with his signature scribbled between the stitching. Berger writes that…
Earlier, Giuliani made a statement that suggested he would drop out of the race if he failed to win Florida: “The winner of Florida will win the nomination; we’re going to win Florida.” Asked directly if a loss would end his campaign, Giuliani said: “Wednesday morning, we’ll make a decision.” Filed under: Campaign 2008 and Florida Primary and Rudy Giuliani Comments: 1 Comment |

Since the 2008 Republican primary race began, Rudy Giuliani’s consistent message to the American public has been that his personal experience with 9/11 makes him the best candidate for the highest office in the land. Seemingly as an afterthought has been his history of cutting taxes 23 times while serving as mayor of New York. Hs main focus has been on the terrorists’ efforts against the United States, and how he is best suited to keep the nation safe. However, in recent days, and in light of a looming recession, Giuliani has apparently changed his focus from national security to domestic economics. Now, in addition to reminding us how he cut taxes in New York, and turned a multi-billion budget deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus, he’s driving home a message of taking decisive action on our current economic problems. The former New York mayor is in favor of making the Bush tax cuts permanent and his tax cut plan is the largest in modern American History. In addition, Rudy has proposed a new form for tax filing and wants to give Americans a choice of either using the old tax forms or using the new “Fair And Simple Tax form”, or F.A.S.T. The new form only has three rates allowing Americans to save substantially in taxes. Rudy Giuliani’s tax plan is extensive, touching on all areas of the economy normally encountered by the average American. He intends on repealing the death tax, cutting the corporate tax rate, cutting the capital gains tax, and indexing the AMT for inflation and eventually he will eliminate it altogether. One thing’s for sure, America needs a fiscal conservative and Rudy Giuliani is unlike both John McCain, who has voted more than 50 times not to cut taxes, and Mitt Romney who not only failed to cut taxes but actually raised them in many cases. Florida may be Rudy’s last stand. For the sake of the economy, let’s hope he pulls off a win finally. Tonight’s debate in Florida continued to highlight one of the most interesting elements in this year’s Republican primary battle. While all of the candidates seem to be running to win, they’re all pretty friendly with each other at the same time. It’s almost like they wouldn’t mind losing to each other that much. Well, except to Mitt Romney. McCain, Giuliani, and Huckabee all seem to absolutely hate the sight of the millionaire former Governor. At every opportunity tonight, the shots were aimed squarely at Mitt, with Huckabee suggesting that Romney ought to stop spending his children’s inheritance. McCain came to Rudy’s defense when he was being pressed: “I happen to know he’s an American hero,” said McCain of Giuliani’s leadership during September 11th. Giuliani took a shot at Romney in his question about the idea of a national catastrophic fund, poking Mitt’s record of flip-flopping on the issues: “I was wondering if you’ve come to a position on this,” Rudy asked. Then it was Huckabee’s turn to take a shot at Romney on 2nd Amendment issues. A NY Times article today made note of the intense dislike for Romney among his major rivals…

Looking beyond Florida, the situation should be good for Rudy Giuliani. February 5th’s massive burst of primaries includes huge states like California, New York, and New Jersey. But recent polling shows just how much trouble Giuliani is actually in. Polling averages put Giuliani in second in Florida, fourth in California, and now he’s even trailing John McCain in his home state of New York. The big state advantage for Giuliani has been erased. Moderates and those looking for a candidate strong on terrorism have shifted their support to McCain in droves. The “waiting for Florida” strategy has been widely cited in the media, but the reality is that Rudy did campaign in New Hampshire and some other early states. It might have been half-hearted, but resources were spent and the fact that he’s failed to crack 10% in any contest is telling. The Giuliani campaign is holding out that a Florida victory could turn everything around. That may be true, but anything short of outright victory will leave the former New York mayor low on funds and with no place to turn.
